How to Choose the Right Pool Pump

Posted on 2022-04-20 12:34:27

Choosing the right pump is vital to keeping your pool looking its sparkling best, but with so many options on the market, doing so can be a challenge.

A pump that's underpowered will be inefficient at keeping your pool clean, and one that’s overpowered can place extra stress on your filter.

To figure out which is right for your needs, you must first find the total volume of your pool.

Know Your Pool Volume

These formulas will allow you to determine how much water needs to be circulated, and therefore, how powerful your pump should be.

If your pool is rectangular or square, use -

Length (M) x Width (M) x Average Depth (M) x1000 = Volume in Litres

If your pool is round, use -

3.14 x Radius Squared (M) x Average Depth (M) x1000 = Volume in Litres

If your pool is kidney shaped -

Divide your pool into square and round sections, then use the above equations to calculate its total volume.

Select Your Pump

Armed with the knowledge of your pool’s volume, you can now select a pump capable of circulating it efficiently (i.e. within 6 - 8 hours).

Note: A pump that's too powerful can cause ineffective filtration. Use only a pump matched to the dimensions of your pool.
